The Original Stack™

What you are gettingThe Original Stack is the natural operating environment you were built for, in five layers.

Where it fitsIt is the ground the other resources stand on. The retreat runs on the full stack. Most working weeks run on none of it.

Five layers, walked in order

The Stack is not a metaphor. It is the set of conditions a human nervous system expects to operate inside, layered from the ground up, and the retreat is built so that you spend three days on all five at once. Most of a working week removes them one by one without anyone deciding to.

The five layers

From chapter seven of Hard. You walk them in this order on the land.

  • Light. The body is a sundial. Full-spectrum daylight sets cortisol, melatonin and the clock itself in ways no lighting system replicates.
  • Thermal. Temperature as a variable, not a setting. The stress and recovery systems need cold and heat to cycle. A life held at seventy-two degrees is a thermostat, not a nervous system.
  • Microbiome. We are porous, built to sample the earth, the plants and the living systems around us. The immune system learns from what it meets; sterilise the environment and you sterilise the education.
  • Fractal. The eye is calibrated to the branching of trees, the edge of a cloud, moving water. Those patterns measurably lower stress. Straight lines and right angles do not.
  • Gravity and grounding. Uneven ground underfoot wakes postural and neurological systems that a flat floor and a good chair quietly switch off.

Light has two halves. The dark one counts.

Fractal. The pattern the eye was calibrated to.

“The Original Stack is not nostalgia for nature. It is the operating condition for which the hardware was designed. Every hour spent in artificial light, synthetic noise and fractal-free geometry is an hour spent running the machine outside its design parameters.”

The full teaching is in chapter seven of Hard, which is free to read on this site. On the land you walk it layer by layer on the Long Path spur on day two, which is why the chapter reads differently after you have been here.
